Cloud Backups - OnPrem

Hello,

 

I know this gets covered often, But looking at cloud backups 

We are still a RM network and only have a single host with 3 VM's from what i can see, No physical backup server and only Windows Server Backup... 

 

What software and online backup storage/software provider are you using and a estimated cost.

 

I would like a physical backup server/storage onsite that also uploads to cloud solution (Not sure if that's doable or a thing)

No idea how well it would with RM network (20 years or so since I was last near one);

 

We support a couple of Primary schools that are single Hyper-V server with a few VMs. The VMs have VEEAM windows agent installed which backup to Peasoup Cloud. Very simple and relatively low cost to implement.

 

For my main Secondary school location we've been using VEEAM Enteprise for years - it backs up to local storage and cloud (again, pretty simple to set up). Prices vary based on number of backed up VMs and backup data size ...

I know Veeam can do this. Just on the cloud side of things. Does it include the licence for Veeam etc.. ?

We use Veaam to backup our VM's to a NAS in a separate building. This is then replicated to Peasoup Cloud. Can't comment on the RM side as i've never touched an RM network

 

We buy our Veeam licences directly from Peasoup, plus the cloud storage.

VEEAM works with many cloud storage providers so licence & storage fees are separate.

Like Ollidawg said, Peasoup will also sell you VEEAM licences along with the storage.

Software: for our Windows infrasturcture we use Veeam (Edit: around £65 per license, I think). I think they still sell licenses in 5-packs, possibly with a 10 license minimum(?), and you use one license per VM backup. If you have less than 10 VMs to back up you can use their free community edition. Veeam can connect directly to various cloud backup providers, we use Backblaze at £6 per TB per month. They provide an Amazon S3-compatible service to connect to, which I'd think most similar storage providers would do and which seesm to be the most common backup software / storage provider solution.

 

The free community edition of Veeam, can't connect to cloud storage. However, you can sync your local Veeam backup files to a storagre provider if you can connect via a filesystem client of some sort - I've found rclone to work well in the past. It's another thing to set up and maintain, so not really recommended for a production setup unless you are very limited in budget.

I forgot about the community edition of Veaam. At least that should some some better backups than Windows Backup.

 

Might look in to this for the short team and get some pricing for Full Veaam and Peasoup as that looks promising.

 

How many restore points do you account for in the cloud?

Redstor have educational pricing for pretty much as much storage as you need, 7 year retention, priced based on the size of the school. I know LGfL customers get it for free if they have a 5-year commitment on their internet connection.

 

We have that on our previous server that's still running, which was a vanilla Windows 2016 server (but with RM's configuration as they installed it for us).

I think we do daily backups for three weeks, with weekly full backups and daily differential backups, then I think weekly backups for 3 months, then monthly for 3 months then yearly - is that around 40 backups? Most of them probably differential rather than full. We only backup around half a dozen VMs, probably around 800GB of disk image which winds up as a bit over 2TB of backup data in total, which costs us around £15 or so per month.

We use RedStor, which we purchased via RM, pretty much unlinited storage, easy to configure and use.

We use Veeam backing up to an on-site server and Wasabi cloud storage. It comes to about £3k per year for 25tb cloud storage and the veeam enterprise licenses.
