What do we think of "Aluminium OS"?

Intrigued to see people's thoughts on Aluminium OS - Google's new desktop version of Android "coming soon ltd."

It feels like it could really shake up the market, especially if they launch desktops running this.

Not too bad, to me its like plus subscription to Google Chrome OS lol. I wonder what enteprise stuff they'll bring to it if any hopefully the same integration as chrome os.

 

Deep down i just wish we could repurpose chrome OS licenses!

It's the eventual replacement to ChromeOS, and looks like ChromeOS to me - just with Android as the code base, rather than grafting Android onto the system later.
I don't think there's much to see yet. Education devices won't see it until 2028 at the earliest, and most of the machines in students hands in particular will not be running this at all. We've got a long way before ChromeOS is phased out entirely. You're looking at 8 to 10 years.

The point is that it's designed to run equally well on laptops and on phones, so you plug your phone into a KB/Mouse/Video and it becomes your desktop PC (I do this already with a steamdeck). I expect this is going to come into direct conflict with school/govt obsession of banning phones, rather than unfiltered access.

Interesting idea. Google have a habit of not taking their own products seriously, so I personally won't take it seriously myself until I've seen evidence they do.

You joke, but I'm running over 100 servers using Container-Optimized OS. Which is based on Chromium OS

Honestly it makes sense to me. Kids are already used to Android for the most part and if they both share the same app infrastructure then perhaps Chromebooks could be used for more than just doing kids homework etc.  It doesn't really make sense to have Chromebook OS and also Android OS.

 

I get that there might be some UI adjustments made depending on if the user is on a phone or a chromebook - so how different this UI is from a phone UI would be the key I'd imagine. A taskbar and running android apps in windows (not just full screen) is how I'd imagine it?

 

That's what is so amazing about Microsoft's failure with Windows 8 lol. It's like they didn't even think it through. Even worse in MS's case was that their user base was PC and server; Googles base is primarily mobile devices as it is.
