Quote

The BBC has announced that it will produce tailor-made content for YouTube in a milestone for British television as the public service broadcaster teams up with the world’s biggest video platform.

The corporation has previously posted clips and trailers for BBC shows on YouTube but under the new deal it will make fresh programming for its online rival.

The content would span a mixture of entertainment, news and sport, starting with the Winter Olympics in February, the BBC said.

The broadcaster is fighting to adapt to a rapidly changing media landscape. YouTube, which is owned by Google, overtook the BBC last month in terms of audience share for the first time. Almost 52 million people watched YouTube on their televisions, smartphones or laptops in December, compared with 50.9 million who tuned into the BBC, according to the official ratings agency Barb...

I'd heard vaguely about this, but only with mention of CBBC providing better quality children's content on the platform.

Interesting that it says a TV licence won't be needed, as well as no ads. Interested to see how that will get funded.

They might try and say that if you watch any BBC content on YouTube you need a TV license. Bit skeptical the BBC is always trying to push people to buying a TV license and the controversial license reminder letters, more and more people are cancelling. Personally they could not pay me to watch BBC anymore or any main stream media outlet. See what happens when the charter is due for renewal in 2027.

I guess it falls into the same basket as radio. (If you include all the regional ones, the BBC has dozens of radio channels that run pretty much 24/7, that's got to cost a reasonable chunk of budget.)

They could mean "no ads" in the same way regular BBC channels and iPlayer "don't have ads" but content is preceded by a trailers for other BBC content (or that one time, the trailer for the thing I was about to watch), which would theoretically push people to the main BBC channels/iPlayer and increase licence fee revenue from UK residents. And it does say they'd have Ads for people outside the UK.

As an aside, I'm cynical enough to think youtube will run ads eventually regardless of what the BBC want.

Not sure why so many people have a downer on the BBC? I'm more of a radio person, e.g. BBC radio 3. But they do some great TV as well.

Won't comment too much on here 🙂

Lets jus say that I abandoned all MSM during covid due to certain comments effecting my anxiety but even before that I'd lost interest in any of the programs to be honest. But I've never really been a TV person either.
