Backups - O365, Google, VEEAM, Synology

Hi Guys,

 

Just reaching out to everyone too see how your backups are doing!

 

I wanted to know if anyone does similar or more cost effective?

 

With about 40ish VMs we use VEEAM for dailybackups to one synology rack with 100tb of data. We then have a seperate backup using synology Active Backup for Business to do a second set of backups.

o365 & Google - with both synology racks we do constant backups.

VEEAM every Monday does a tape backup.

 

VEEAM 2.5k a year

Synology completely free for just a one off cost (was paying 5k for cloud yearly then brought the kit myself for 3k so brought 2x) 

 

Do you guys do similar or pay for cloud backup? Do you guys do tape backups?

Single Academy school here 5 form entery so relatively small school. 

 

Servers (2 hyper-v hosts 1 legacy file server) + Physical DPM Server

DPM daily backups all vms physical servers SQL dbs  - once a month these are "restored" to large HDD for offline storage (6TB is enough for us)

 

Most of our stuff is stored in the google environment i want to say its about 11TB (not at work so cant check from my personal laptop)

 

We backup Google via Synology https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/feature/active_backup_google_workspace they have the same for MS

 

We have one NAS on all the time RS1221 backing up google and this is what we uses if we need to restore anything or investigate anything in gmail drive etc.

 

We then have two smaller (4 drive) Synology NASs with very large drives in that on a two week rotation get switched on and manually backup google again active backup for google workspace.  this way we always have a NAS with a reasonably recent backup of workspace offline. - it usually takes a couple of days to do this  before it gets switched back off.

 

Edit Cost - Synology one off the cost of the NAS plus the drives... DPM part of our OVS agreement so 1 systems center license and 1 windows server license

 

MIS is Bromcom so Cloud based so its not a DB i need to backup... otherwise my DB backup strategy would be more frequent... our SQL only hosts trivial data that would not be a problem if lost.. - with Bromcom since the recent outage we now have scheduled reports that export critical info we may need to our gmail box

Very similar.

Veeam wraps up everything locally and then does a copy job to Wasabi for immutable off-site cloud backup.

Synology backs up O356 and stores it locally, just in case.

 

Same as you, kept having Barracuda et. al. contacting me about 365 backups and how MS could lose all our work and not care and our puppies would be stolen, my hair would fall out, flying monkeys would steal my lunch and no one would find me attractive ever again unless I bought their product. Bought Synology for less than 1 year's subscription and haven't looked back.  We also have some nice onsite storage. Number of times I have had to get something from it? 0, piece of mind that I can now if needed, priceless.

We use a combination of Veeam + Active 365 backup on a Synology NAS.

 

VM's are backed up daily to our NAS, the backups are then sent to our cloud provider Peasoup via a backup copy job, this is our immutable backup.

LGFL customer so RedStor included for free and I backup all our cloud stuff and our onsite VMs to it. They store the backups in two different locations to fulfil the 3-2-1.

Redstor, does a product where the price is based on pupil numbers.

 

Unlimited data, not sure how true that is, but we've got 30TB+ stored, and the price hasn't changed.

We also do a backup to onsite synology for daily quicker restores. and then Redstor for the 3-2-1 rule.

Must admit the RS1221+s are fantastic cant complain!
