Clevertouch and HDCP

Hi all,

Our teaching staff have started to include portions of films in their lesson materials. They've been trying to play from Blu-rays, Amazon Prime, etc from their MacBooks to the Clevertouches but there seems to be some sort of HDCP issue as it isn't playing on the screen. As soon as the display dock is disconnected, it plays fine on the laptop.

Has anyone else run into a similar issue and have a potential fix?

I'd suggest like you say, it's HDCP - doing it's job really thpugh?

 

I bet that "content" isn't licenced for any kind of commercial/business use. The teachers should know better.

Have your Clevertouches got any form of recording software on them? In which case the display is behaving exactly as it should.

If it's been on broadcast TV it is (probably) fair game to be used on a whiteboard even if the whiteboard *could* copy the content... because the ERA licence allows you to *copy*  too!

 

The ERA Licence

"...Show clips or copies of whole programmes from our Members’ output for educational purposes (this includes films).

• Use clips from our broadcasters’ websites and catch-up services.
• Any number of copies can be made and retained.
• Copies can be kept for as long as an ERA Licence is held.
• Share programmes or clips on VLEs and embed clips in presentations.
• Access recordings via an approved third party for example Clickview Exchange or eStream.
• Students can access ERA licensed material over a secure network on or off-site in the UK."

 

If its not been on broadcast tv/radio, then its the MPLC , which is more restrictive (I don't think copying is allowed) but either way you absolutely are licenced to show it to a class.

 

A digital display in a classroom should not be restricting you like that as the school has multiple licences to show most content.

Unfortunately those manufacturers are HDCP adopters and are bound by the terms of the DCP. They can't turn it off just because their screen is in a classroom.

 

There are other ways though - for example HDCP is not transmitted over VGA. That's as much as I'll say on a public forum!

Rather a few 4K screens here connected using VGA
