Allowing students to keep devices at graduation

We have an idea floating around to allow graduating seniors to either keep, or to "buy out" (for $1?) their Chromebook at graduation. 

 

Are any of your districts doing this? What are the pros and cons? Any suggestions, advice, ideas?

 

We're very curious if doing this gives an incentive to have students take better care of their devices... or do highschool freshmen simply not plan that far ahead?

If students expect to keep the device when they leave, they may be less inclined toward vandalism—a major problem with school-owned kit in my previous jobs.

 

Edit: Also, this will "automate" hardware rotation/renewal.

It could also be used to assist with compliance in other areas:

 

Purchase and transfer will only be possible if library fines (if any) are cleared.

 

Apply more (or fewer) conditions as befits circumstances.

Yes, we do this. Part of the 6th form offer is they are given a Chromebook when they start with us either from our year 11 or externally, and provided they are here for the majority of their 2 year term, it's theirs to keep afterwards. Whilst with us, the devices are fully managed on our Google tenant with all the necessary policies etc, and upon leaving they are given the choice. If they'd like to keep them, they're sent the powerwash command and away they go.
