Hi folks, our music teacher has suddenly pulled DJ decks and trombones out of his back end following a grant. Now he wants to know how he can run his class going forward and asks...

  1. How do we link the music accounts to download MP3s to laptops?
  2. How does the school pay for any downloaded music?
  3. If a pupil requests a song to work with, what are the guidelines that we should adhere to? Currently in rap performance I allow tracks that have swear words, but it is one thing to stream a track off YouTube to be studied “in the moment” and another to purchase it for download as a budgetary expense.

How do you folks run this? Currently I have audio/video sites/services blocked in Lightspeed and Sophos.

a) Stick the music school owns in a shared folder.

b) Buy the songs - Amazon Mp3 or rip directly from CD.

c) Teacher choice. Give teacher access to Amazon account and wash your hands of it entirely?

The actual purchasing of the music and how it goes through is a problem for finance. Teacher could purchase and claim back petty cash. Either way as long as there's a place to store the MP3s then you're good I think? let them run themselves and don't get too involved!

This seems like a lot of 'music teacher wants something, wants recognition for doing it but can't be bothered to do the legwork/prep work to get it ready, so I'll pass it to IT to figure out Music Teacher'

If they're qualified why aren't they doing this/done this before it got put onto your desk?

Doesn't seem entirely sensible to me, to put children in charge of their own purchasing...

Agreed.

Neither however does it sound like (that aspect) a technical problem requiring IT input.  Sounds like LTS to me - Lazy Teacher Syndrome

I have suggested to the music teacher that they can request the school buy some small-value Apple gift cards and use these against an Apple ID that he controls for use on his student laptops.

That way the expense is controlled by the music department and cannot be abused in the same way they had a debit card assigned to the account.
