Xibo Players

Morning all,

 

We'd been hoping to switch out xibo player machines to using linux in advance of the windows 10 retirement (the mini-pcs we're using at the moment are way too old to run win11). But it turns out the linux player is terrible at embedded webpages. They either don't load properly or don't load at all, and the player looks to be about 3 years and 2 versions old (at least in the repo all the guides point me to).

 

So what are you guys doing for xibo players/what options do I have for low/no cost xibo players that will work with an on-site installation?

We're looking at YoDeck for exactly this reason - will mean a migration away to a new solution - but at around £80 per year per device, it's not too bad - and you get a raspberry Pi included for that.

We gave up using any low spec hardware or "Sticks" (eg compute sticks) We even tried getting LG TVs with WebOS built in to run the client - Just more headaches than it's worth.

 

We now just buy second hand Windows 11 capable machines from ICT Direct (£125/150), put them in our coms cabs & then use HDMI > Cat senders to the TVs. 

I have GPO setup that essentially fully sets these devices up when dropped in the right OU, just needs the activation key from XIBO. Painless.

 

Pay for their cloud version as well, it's fairly cheap

+ for PC's, tried low-power solutions before and they just didn't work properly. A Windows PC worked fine.

 

Would you be willing to share any other details on how you've set them up in your comms cabs/cabling etc please?. That sounds like a great idea.

 

+1 for cloud hosting, we've had ZERO issues with it and fast helpful UK-based support as well.

You just plug the HDMI out into the sender (& power) & then into a patch panel that goes to a socket nearby the TV. - Stick the receiver at the other end, HDMI into the TV and job done. Don't need local power at the TV end beyond the TV.

We've used interactive TVs as well as the one in the link above has USB.

 

You can get cheaper ones if you're not fussed about USB or ok with just 1080p/30hz

Just makes it easier to service the devices instead of trying to hide them locally near the TV.

 

We've also fed these into a HDMI splitter at the TV end to have the same image on two TVs at once (It would really screw up my OCD otherwise...)

 

& aye, cloud hosting is definately the way forward, it's so incredibly cheap for what it is & saves you the headache of manually upgrading/hosting a server.
