A Level Web Development

Request from teacher to allow access to a personal external FTP server they setup for A Level Web Development so they can learn about client-side and server -side scripting i.e PHP access to a MySQL database - ringing a few alarms without fully looking into it

 

They used to use replit but I believe the firewalled version is now discontinued, previously used XAMMP at another school but not too comfortable having that installed on student machines either to be honest.

 

What do you do for this?

What are they using?  E.g. with dreamweaver you can put the ftp details in so you can easily upload or download / publish pages.

 

Either way I wouldnt use a personal FTP site for anything to do with school so maybe set up a seperate school FTP somehow - might be possible to use your existing school website for this?

Going back a few (15?) years we just setup a lamp stack and had the students upload using their regular credentials. It was using mod_userdir IIRC.

I don't think I've even looked at apache lately but it was a good 'old school' solution and sounds like essentially what they are doing, just hosted in school.

Is there any reason you can't just make an internal ISS IIS web server? (or add ISS IIS to a student facing server you already have)

I heard that ISS had sky-high running costs 😘

 

IIS can do it, with add-ons etc. You can also do auth linked to their accounts. Bit unwieldy though!
