CAM Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 What do you look at when it comes to TA versus Test Level for KS2? I've been going by the TA for years but after trying 4Matrix and their KS3 stuff, I realised the KS2 TA has been going into a column called Test Level. Which one should be used?
LosOjos Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I use test level if I have it, though that's getting less and less frequent. TA I have mixed feelings on. On the one hand, they can be more accurate than test levels as the teacher's assessment could reflect more realistically what the student is capable of, rather than being a "snapshot" like the test level - they may have been having a bad/good day when they took the test. On the other hand, there's the risk that teacher assessments are unrealistically high as teachers are often judged on the progress of their students, so can over-estimate their true ability. Not saying that's a regular occurrence, but it happens. All that said, as soon as Fischer release their Y7 data, we use the KS2 levels they provide as we figure that helps keep things uniform (our target matrices are based on FFTD)
number34 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I always use the test result as that is what OFSTED and RAISE do. If we do not have a test result then I use a TA but follow the rules that RAISE apply. I will investigate the FFT KS2 levels that come out in January but then will only use them for English.
CAM Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 OK, raising this again as I have a quick question again! Thanks for the replies so far. I'm trying to get the SubLevel in based on what is in FFT, the Head wants this for analysis instead of TA. I can only see marksheets to put in whole numbers though, where do you put your KS2 Test Sublevels in for analysis? Also what do you do about paper files that only have whole numbers for tests and say Reading / Writing, etc instead of an overall result?

timetableman Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 We use Test level data where we have it, and TA data to make up the shortfall, we only use the Data the DFE hold so as to ensure we are comparing ourselves in the same way as we will be compared, - IF a TA isn't available on K2S. We use TA data for students who join from independent schools - though they usually aren't submitted to DFE so will be shown in the N/A other row of the KS4 performance tables when they leave.

I received this email from the DfE last week: 2014 key stage 3 teacher assessment Following publication of the new national curriculum, the assessment arrangements for key stage 3 were disapplied from 2013. This means that in 2014 there will be no requirement for schools to report key stage 3 teacher assessment to the Department for Education (DfE) or to collect and submit data to the Standards and Testing Agency via the NCA tools website. There is also no requirement to report key stage 3 assessment to parents. The DfE sent a communication to schools and local authorities to confirm this change in October 2013.
