That looks like one supplied by one of the 'big three' IWB companies. A quick search also suggests that it may have been sold under other brand names, one of which is indeed in the "big three". Might be worth checking whether you've got one even if you've never bought a Conen branded product.

so why such a ridiculously long time to issue a H&S notice?
Testing / investigation to see if it was an installation / user / design fault at a guess. And being legally fireproof before blaming the mfr.

Dang, I have one AND there is a laptop trolley stuffed under it.... Lucky I've never given it power after installation.

This is how I found it...

 

Looking back at the BBC article, you can see a trolley to the side of the TV probably the cause.

I don't think its the same one - pretty sure this was the RA one and wasn't fixed correctly to wall/floor.

 

The fixings were inadequate BUT it is the way (or why) they're ripped out of the wall!

 

A child can operate the screen (if the buttons are mounted low enough) the motorised stand is heck powerful, and if something obstructs the TV from lowering (like a cart) then the motor will rip out the fixings from the wall and topple.

 

The second I read this, I could see how this would happen. Anything short of anchor bolts would probably fail with 1000's of NM or torque trying to move.

 

The one in the BBC picture looks just like the one in the PDF. Just like mine, different colour but same operating mode.

 

TLDR: TV can't go down, stand will go up, bolts go bye bye.

Yeah, somewhat suprising it doesn't have anti collision and fixed by anchor bolts.

4600 N of force is roughly 470 KG or about half a metric ton, so there is a risk of a crush injury as well if the fixings don't fail.

 

The plasterboard fixings used in the BBC report I don't think are even rated high enough for the screen, let alone enough for someone swinging on it or the motor working against it. Even decent plasterboard fixings like Snap-Toggles are only rated at 100kg or so, and that's entirely dependent on the plasterboard. I wouldn't rely on them alone in a school without screwing into the studwork.

 

It looks like the same mechanism is used on trolleys as well. We tested some of our trolleys and they didn't seem to stop when tested - so we've unplugged these for now until we can get the installer back in. I think there might be a sensor strip available, but I can't find it listed with any suppliers.

 

We've also started checking all our other boards as well and identified one other old projector-type IWB that had worked loose as well, and last time this happened we found one as well. So its probably worth schools checking this from time to time. I want to start having a record of when things were installed or last checked, as some of ours were installed 10 or 20 years ago.

This is something we implemented when the news originally broke. The Site Manager and I check our screens and their fittings every 3 months now - I also tend to do a spot check anytime I'm in a classroom.

 

We've also started asking installers exactly what fittings they are using, so we can keep a record for future reference.
