Processers vs cores

I've had a very busy weekend and my brain is still asleep please help!

 

On this capture what are the number of processors, cores per processor and total cores? I'm thinking 2, 4, 8 am I correct?

2 Sockets = 2 Separate CPUs

8 Virtual Processors = I'd imagine 4 each, but not enough info to tell you 100%, you could use something like CPU-Z to give more info (or look in the Hypervisor)

Thats showing that socket 1 only have 1 core, what does socket 2 say?

 

Are you not able to get into the hypervisor?

As it's virtual none of that matters, you have 8 virtual cpus, that's all you know

This basically ^^ the hypervisor running it will manage things behind the scenes against the real cpu's although there may be 2/more sockets in the real motherboard as it may be beneficial to pass through how many cpu's you can run on to the virtual OS for performance reasons.

The servers are offsite with the MSP and I don't have access to the host so no snapshots when installing software or updates. The host is running Linux but the VMs are Server 2019. The question of processers and cores came up when looking at MS licencing which is due for renewal soon and the current licencing is through the MSP. I have a feeling the school is not getting best value when buying licencing from them so there you have it. Only been at this school for 6 weeks and keep finding poor value that the school has bought.

The licencing guides I've seen say:

When licensing by virtual machine, the number of core licenses required equals the number of virtual cores in the virtual operating system environment, subject to a minimum of 8 core licenses per virtual machine and 16 core licenses per customer.

Based on this you have 8 virtual processors, so you need licences for 8 cores (which is the minimum per machine anyway). Whether you can get a better deal elsewhere is another question.

Yeah, it's just Microsoft's really annoying way of charging people with more cores extra. Why they can't just say "if you have > 16 cores buy an add on" is unknown to civilisation
