Default Browser Check

Hi,

 

I'm trying to prevent the tick box, "check if internet explorer is default browser" been ticked.

 

I have disabled the policy User Config > Admin Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer

 

"changing default browser check "

 

However, its still ticked for members of staff, and originally they hve to untick it and it works fine. I've done something though and now when they untick it, it re-ticks itself on load of IE. I have disabled it, in all policys applied to that machine.

 

Also, the policy to show the "Programs" page overrides this. We use Winsuite which does remove that page for pupils, so the policy isn't getting applied to them.

 

Any ideas? Could i do it through a regedit at logon?

It sounds like their profiles might be causing the problem. Try allocating one member of staff a new profile.

 

You're right about the IE policy and yes, you could also do it through a registry file at logon, but you shouldn't need to, to be honest.

Thanks but this is on a fresh XP install. We don't have roaming or mandatory profiles. Just as it comes with the Winsuite add-in.

Might be quicker for me to do via registry in all users startup rather than messing about trying to trouble shoot. Any ideas what the reg file would be to take the tick out?

If you're familiar with Active Directory and policies (and it sounds like you are) why not remove Winsuite altogether?

 

I think the fact you're not using roaming or roaming mandatory profiles is the problem. If users aren't allocated a roaming profile, a new one is created from the local default profile on every machine.

 

As a guess the reason you're having these problems is because you probably have IE and another browser, such as Firefox installed. When running IE it detects it's not the default browser. Now because a new profile would be created per machine, you're going to have this problem on every machine.

 

The advantage of a roaming profile, is you can create and perfect the profile then allocate it to your users. All their settings/preferences/favourites roam with them and is a much more simple way of doing things.
