Connected but 'No Internet' message

Hi all,

 

 

We went to Windows 11 this year for staff, and any Wi-Fi device that we have connects to the network fine, but will show a 'No Internet' message in the corner. Everything works as intended, but obviously we get the occasional flap from members of staff where they think they don't have internet.

 

We can ping 1.1.1.1, and this will change it to say that they do have Wi-Fi, but whenever they leave site with the laptops and come back, it starts showing the same message as last time.

 

Does anyone have any fix for this? It's not a major problem but would be nice to get ironed out before we eventually roll it out to students too.

Network Awareness service (NLASVC). If it cannot talk to a MS server it thinks the device has no internet. It is the one icon that replaces the red cross, yellow exclamation mark and working internet symbols. About as useful for troubleshooting as a chocolate fireguard in front of a fire.

 

Plenty of ways around.

I've just checked services and it was off by default. Switched it to automatic start and rebooted with no change. Any other ideas on this one?

Is any network traffic being blocked to either of these domains? These are what deem whether you have "internet connection" or not in the taskbar icon.

I've added it to our whitelist just to make sure, both sites gave a security warning when I tried to access them

 

net::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

 

Will check back when the filter has updated and see if the issue is still around.

Not sure on the entire process but i believe the windows device makes DNS requests to those domains to determine internet connection

basically through trial and error I came up with this to solve my particular setup, I do not gurantee it will help yours!

NLA is a nightmare of poor documentation and half-truths online.

 

I had a nightmare with it here as well, our LEA run our switches, one day we came in to all our cabled machines saying "No Internet" despite the Internet working fine. Problem is if the NLA thinks there is no Internet, certain things like Adobe CC and Office 365 refuse to work.

 

I couldn't get it to work with any workaround except disabling IP4 Offloading on each workstations NIC. Only MS could mess up what should be a basic Internet check like this (the URL's it checks all loaded fine here). For us some of the reg entries would just change the icon so instead of the No Internet globe, it showed a normal Ethernet icon, but it still said "No Internet".
