Koldov Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Just us...? Strange 10 minutes in the ICT suite just now, called by a teacher saying why is Google Classroom blocked?! First couple of hits on Google search for Classroom come up with strange Google Sites page (these are the web pages that were being blocked). Classroom doesn't appear in their list of apps if signed on to Chrome. classroom.google.com takes them to a US page which appears to be just Google Classroom information website... Luckily it recommended going to the UK site and there was a 'Login to Classroom' button.

Luckily it recommended going to the UK site and there was a 'Login to Classroom' button. Also seeing a couple of odd Google Sites results when Googling "Google Classroom". At the foot of those pages is "This site has absolutely not connection to Google, LLC", so I've no idea how benign they are and why there near the top of search results. The shortcut that we include on our intranet page is https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/identifier?service=classroom&passive=1209600&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fclassroom.google.com%2Fu%2F0%2Fh&followup=https%3A%2F%2Fclassroom.google.com%2Fu%2F0%2Fh&flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin&hd=schoolname.org (The final parameter will prepopulate the domain name in the username field for you)
DeGrimmy Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Yes, I've noticed that students prefer to type "Classroom" into Google and blindly click the top result here instead of using the waffle menu, student bookmarks folder that we have in place, etc. At least one of the top 5 results in Google for us does appear to be a Google Sites page, but we have Google Sites blocked for most students here. We don't have an intranet page or student links page like we do with the staff, so I'm now wondering if it's worth setting Google Classroom as the student homepage in Google Admin - It would definitely help to avoid this scenario?
RLR Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 We've had this too! Students searching "Google Classroom" and one of the top hits is a fake site that's created on sites.google.com. This is blocked so students think Google Classroom is blocked. I've emailed the computer science teachers this infrormation so they can tell them to write classroom.google.com into the address bar.

Wow so that site is literally harvesing username from around the world that is pretty darn worrying - try and figure out a way of reporting it. //edit have reported it to our LA filtering and reported it to google as well. Koldov Posted October 11, 2024 Author Posted October 11, 2024 tell them to write classroom.google.com into the address bar. We are having strange behaviour using this option... some get to a Google log-in, some get a Google Classroom product/information/advert page from the US! instead of using the waffle menu Google Classroom doesn't appear in our 'waffle menu' for some reason...
Koldov Posted October 11, 2024 Author Posted October 11, 2024 The shortcut that we include on our intranet page is https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/identifier?service=classroom&passive=1209600&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fclassroom ---snip---- This is good thanks, but I can't seem to make it a 'desktop shortcut' only an 'internet shortcut'.... it seems the 'target' is too long! Which is fine, it's just there are no options to run maximised.
jthompson Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 How about https://workspace.google.com/dashboard instead? It lists apps alphabetically, so Classroom will be fairly prominent. Although, if Classroom was missing from your users' waffle menus, then it might similarly not appear as expected there, either. 1
