Hi,

I am looking for a bit of advice,

I have a HP Z240 SFF WORKSTATION with a compatible HP 560SFP+ 10GB Network card installed Running Windows 11, I want to connect it to my Unifi USW Pro 8 port PoE it has 2 SFP+ Ports, I understand the HP 560SFP+ 10GB Network card only works with the HP 10GbE SFP+ Transceiver's.

So My question is Do i need a HP 10GbE SFP+ Transceiver at the Network card end and a Ubiquiti Networks UACC-OM-MM-10G Transceiver at the Switch end?

Or will i need x2 HP 10GbE SFP+ Transceiver's one at each end? I have run Fiber Optic Cable LC/UPC to LC/UPC OM4 Multimode Duplex, between the PC and the Unifi Switch.

 

Any help would be Great

Usually you would want the manufacturer specific tranciever in the switch, e.g cisco in a cisco unifi in a unifi.

 

The workstations/server network card device being a different manufacturer doesnt ususally matter.

 

So yes should work with a unifi 10GB trasnciever in the unifi switch.

You have two choices, as far as I can see:

 

1) Use a DAC cable. They're usually compatible with anything. As long as the device is within 10m or so of the switch, that's an option. Compatibility is generally not a problem.

2) Use SFP+ transceivers and a bit of fibre. You'll need ones compatible with the device they're being plugged into. Some devices are more fussy about that than others: HP and Cisco switches usually want their own transceivers plugged into them and block other brands when they're plugged in. You can get compatibles, but switch manufacturers have a habit of bricking compatibles with firmware updates. The Ubiquiti switch may work with an HP SFP+ module, it may not. It's probably safer to buy a Ubiquiti one, or one that's guaranteed compatible. Coming to your question, it doesn't matter if the SFP+ module on either end are different brands. As long as they're both the same standard, they'll talk to one another. I used to have Dell servers with SFP+ NICs, they had Dell SFP+ transceivers plugged into them going into an HP switch with HP transceivers and it all worked fine.

You don't need HP transceivers at each end. The transceiving they do conforms to standards so the optical signal will be universal, it's the actual card and/or switch that have firmware check to lock out generic SFPs, which is cruddy.
