OS/Software updating, reporting and CVE's

I got a quote for Manage Engine and their Update/Vulnerability solution was £9000\year....

 

So, looking at Patch my PC, their site says you can deploy 3rd party software through WSUS which I guess is good, but more importantly will it:

• Replace WSUS
  
• Find and recommendation remediation on vulnerabilities in all our software, drivers etc?

The answer to both of those is a no. It doesn’t do drivers. It might do all your apps, it depends what you have. There is a list on their website.

If you have mainstream devices, the vendors often have software to monitor and update drivers. Dell has Dell Command Update and Dell Support Assist. You can sign up as org admin for TechDirect and if you register devices you can monitor status.

 

I had a trial of Manage Engine and it does manage driver updates (only extensively tested on Dell). I found it was a few days behind the Dell notifications - I guess that's the time taken to test and package them.

I do want to point out though that original quote price is annual, so 4500/500 = 9 per endpoint per year, that / 12 = 0.75 per endpoint per month.
