Afternoon all,

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem or its just me?

Upon testing a new install i noticed the C: Drive on a fresh machine was maxed out, a bit of digging and it appears OneDrive was syncing my entire directory to the device, or at least windows thinks it is! (despite files on demand being turned on). This has happened on a few machines with the 2024-07 Cumulative Update installed so i thought i'd cross check a device that didn't have the update.

The device that didn't yet have the update worked fine and the C: drive was normal, i noted the Onedrive client version as 24.151.0728.0003 and proceeded to install the update. After it had completed i noticed the C: was now full like the other devices, I checked the OneDrive version again and it had changed to 24.146.0721.0003 which leads me to believe there's a bug in that version and the July update is installing it.

I've created a quick fix script to remove the affected version and reinstall using Winget, this puts it back to 24.151.0728 and the storage issue is no more. https://liam-robinson.co.uk/july-2024-onedrive-client-disk-space-bug-workaround-fix/

I can't find anything online so I'm thinking it might just be me that's affected, has anyone else come across this?

Using 24.146.0721.0003 here currently and haven't seen any problems.

Nothing silly like you have AV scanning the folder that might be pulling it down as it's accessing files?

Possibly but wouldn't explain why it's working fine with the later version and working fine before the July update. It's strange because in OneDrive itself the files all show with the blue cloud as they are cloud only (as expected) but the OS things they are downloaded to the device. If I go to my profile in system properties, it shows around 1gb in size, i delete it and within a few seconds all the space is back!

A few schools are now starting to see the issue so it's not just us but I can't isolate the problem. Had a teams call with MS to show them the issue, they agreed there's a problem somewhere but not sure what yet. Bizarrely if I uninstall the 24.146.0721.0003 release and redownload it from the OneDrive release page, it seems to work fine :brick:

I've updated my article to include a new script that automatically downloads from the MS website instead of Winget if anyone else comes across it.

Good morning,

We are also having a very similar issue.

Files on Demand has stopped working on our Windows 11 machines (even though the GP's and file icons still look like it is)

Completely filling up hard drives until the PC stops responding.

We have a work around based on your script (Many Thanks) but with 1500 PC's a solution from Microsoft would be useful.

I'd be interested in knowing which others are experiencing this - as this is the only related post I can find online.

If we uninstall OneDrive and all registry entries and install version Version 24.151.0728.0003 it seems to work ok. An example of a "bad" version for us is 24.146.0721.0003

Morning, That's the exact same as we we had! Out of interest what model PC's are you using? I don't have the issue on my Laptops but the PC's do. I found if I uninstall and re-install 24.146.0721.0003 it works, but they have now updated the release page to include 24.151 so I've updated my script to auto download that version.

I've passed your comments on to the representative at Microsoft I've been dealing with so they know its not just an isolated incident.

You guys using a specific 3rd party AV or anything? Still not noticing any examples of it here, so curious if it's something else affecting it, but would be good to see if there's anything to narrow it down

Sophos Intercept-X for us, but don't think its AV related as the re-install works. The devices i'm seeing issue most with have been recently imaged with 23H2 ISO from Microsoft, if a device has upgraded itself to 11 from 10 we don't seem to have the issue. All very strange

Update: Just come off the phone with Microsoft, after 7 days they have now confirmed there's an issue with the July update and the Windows Team are working on it but currently do not have an ETA. He confirmed its specific to Windows 11.

I've tested another device today, fresh install of Windows 11, has OneDrive Version 24.151, applied the 2024-07 update and now the problem has started, OneDrive still on 24.151 so it's not related to the OneDrive client its a windows issue.

Again doesn't explain why some people are seeing it and others aren't but at least they have verified I'm not going insane

We are experiencing the same issue across our site. Did you manage to get any information from Microsoft on what update it is? Was it KB5040442?

Not had much since as my first contact was with the OneDrive team, once they established it was a Windows issue they kinda washed their hands with it. I did ask the manager if someone could contact me with updates but they wasn’t allowed as that’s “paid support”.

Luckily my script seems to work for 99% of devices but It’s worrying I reported this over a month ago and it’s still happening.
