HP USB C Docks

Looking at getting some docks in and the HP's seem a decent value. However I'm confused as hell as their own site lists the "HP USB-C Dock G5" under 3 different product codes, with different stock amounts and different prices. Descriptions all appear the same. Am I missing something?

Likewise does anyone have experience of them? We're mostly HP Probooks but would like the ability to use other devices as and when the need arises.

I use these, very good. The cable can be replaced if damaged which is nice. (few screws) I use with Probook 440 G6 to G9 very well.

We are using the "HP USB-C Essential Dock G5" (which is a different product to the non-essential one) with HP ProBook 450 G8/G9s and ProBook 440 G10s. They've proven to be very good from our experience and little in the way of issues, with the only real one being HDMI to VGA adapter compatibility...but that's more an issue with the cheap adapters than the docks. The USB C cable is long enough to reach either side of a laptop, which is an issue with other docks that have short cables. My only complaint was that I thought the USB C cable was moulded and non-replaceable until I read @chazzy2501's post, so that's not an issue any more! Edited July 4, 2024 by CHiLL

Are you wedded to HP? We started to get the Dell Monitor hubs, which are slightly cheaper than the HP docks and is a monitor, so save on the monitor costs. I think P2425HE is the current version of what we get. Speak to an account manager and it will be lower than the price on the Dell website.

Same here - just buy a P2425HE these days. They do daisy chain together ok as well.

Not wedded no, but monitor hubs aren't much good when there's no need for a monitor (these are for classrooms). We use Iiyama ones where they're useful though.

I have a few HP monitor docks, with DP out for the projector in the classroom. The issue is that sometimes if the external screen is 4k they become unreliable with laptop, monitor and 4k all running off USBC DP mode at the same time. Also many teachers get confused with too many screens and we have to setup the laptop to work with the lid closed.

I had problems with the HP USB-C G5 Docks - work fine with HP laptops and nothing else. Switched to Dell UD22 docks and they seem to work with everything I've tried - up to 3 4K screens as well in some cases.

 

Although good point mentioning the Monitor Hubs! Keep meaning to check those out...

I`ve had a lot of folk more than happy with the less obvious brands lately, 2-Power, Dicota, Origin Storage etc. I know there are advantages in going for the "brand" names but equally, sometimes those advantages don`t justify the extra price.

I'd definitely be interested in "other" brands so any experience welcomed. 2-Power is out - I won't touch them with a barge pole thanks to their exploding batteries. I've seen a few others that just seem too small to be useful; they need to be static on a desk and some of the smaller ones would just go walkies!
