Bromcom Teacher App on PC in andriod emulator

Hi,

 

our data manager has asked us to look at this for the occasions when Bromcom isn't playing nicely.

 

Apparently you can run the Teacher App in a android emulator on your PC to access registers/

 

Anyone done this or have any thoughts on this? In the past I've run emulators but found them to be resource hoggers but this may well have changed.

theres a windows subsystem for android on windows 11, not sure how it works but should let you run apk's

They're still resource hoggers and game orientated (Bluestacks is a good example). But why would that work if any other device isn't? Would be easier to find a random android device or Chromebook to run it on

This is being withdrawn. They decided to make its "store" the Amazon one, which meant very little of use. It was possible to sideload but the one app I tried never worked properly.

when bromcom has gone down recently it's been the webclient that teachers and admin staff use - but the teacher app runs off a different set of servers and so is often up when the main site is down.

 

giving us access to the teacher app without relying on everyone having it installed on their phones would be a handy "if all else fails - break glass" option.

Ah! Then yeah, bluestacks would definitely be out of the question, maybe doable just for one member of staff but otherwise it'd be a nightmare. Phone link could be doable, again only really for singular users though.

 

This is a rambling "thought" - could you use chrome remote desktop or something and "remote" into a chromeOS device with the app installed? (Don't know if such a thing exists!)

Phone Link is very limited. At one stage you could do more with Samsung and some other "big brand" models, but they don't seem to be advertising those features any more. Plus, while I use it a lot, its stability leaves a lot to be desired.

We just allow staff to have it on their personal smartphones. Seems to work in downtime situations but its very rare and really if the MIS is down for an hour, we just fill in attendance data after it comes back.

We have massive resistance to using personal phones for anything. You should have heard the wails and howls when we went 2 factor for O365. You would have thought that we were asking for complete control of their devices.

 

I think this is just going to blow over (I hope)
