Projector has suddenly died - alternatives

Our projector which has been used over 10 years has suddenly died on us. It is a Christie one. We used to pair up a windows laptop using a HDMI cable which is connected to two speakers.

 

I would like to get some advice/ your thoughts on whether it is worth buying a new projector or investing in a touchscreen whiteboard instead such as a Prowise board?

If you have the money for an interactive screen and you can get one to fill the room so those at the back of the room can see it id go that route.

^^^ Definitely this. Projector bulbs are likely to become hard to source soon (due to the mercury).

'Christie' implies large screen size.

 

It really is going to depend on your circumstances as to whether a display is going to be posible, or if you are better replacing with a more modern (laser?) projector.

Ah ha - just how much of a beast is it? We're considering a 110" Viewsonic board for our hall - around £10,000. Was the 98" okay to get installed, and how much power does it take?

As said above, a lot depends on the room size and use. As Christie are normally associated with large projectors, I would guess this is for your main hall? If so, what else is the hall used for? If there's a likelihood of balls flying around for PE then I would stay away from the screen route. Laser projectors these days are pretty good and getting cheaper than they were a few years ago.

 

Screen size is difficult to say as it should factor in various things such as the distance to the furthest viewer and the font size typically used. AVIXA's DISCAS calculator works out all the maths, I typically use 24 point being 3% element height (at 1080p) and 1.77 is 16:9 ratio expressed as a decimal ;-) I do say should though as this is best practise and many on here are bound more by what they can afford or fit into a space. I've been there too, but I've always said at least understand the rules before you break them.

If you're looking for a simple solution, a new projector might be the best bet. It's a great option to get started, and you can always upgrade to an interactive board later when your budget allows

Just for people's information, depending on viewing resolution needed, I've found that LED screens are much cheaper than LCD screens. We were quoted just under half the cost for an LED setup that was bigger than than the LCD option. May not always be the case, and may not be suitable for every situation.

It might be a good time to explore new options like a touchscreen whiteboard. They offer interactive features that could be really useful depending on your needs. If you're used to projecting for presentations, a whiteboard could add more versatility. It's worth checking out reviews and comparing costs to see what fits your setup and budget best.

It might be more cost effective in the long run as well in terms of maintenance and power consumption.

I guess due to the size of screen which I would guess is a 4x3 screen, I would look at a Laser projector something like the below…

The new Laser projectors are really good.

 

No waiting for the bulb to heat up and it's as clear and colourful as a normal monitor.

I can't see a reply with a screen/room size. Thats going to make the biggest difference. I'd be looking at a laser projector, and keep the bigger screen size.

It would be worth looking at something like the below for the Hall, You would need a separate speaker source but you should have that in-place with having a Projector. I was recommended this from WM Networks and spoke to Colin.
