So really simply, as a large primary we are currently paying nearly £5k per year with a well known school internet provider in the South West. 1Gbs FTTP connection with filtering and monitoring (CLUNKY).

The quality of service goes down, the prices go up.

If anyone has moved away from the default provider and gone it alone, maybe with smoothwall or other filtering service could you let me know any of the following.

Basic cost per year. Broadband, filtering, what router / hardware was used.

Setup time.

How difficult was it to replace what was in place before.

This is only sending out feelers at the moment. The thought of taking on more responsibility is a little daunting. So if there are other fully managed providers you have experience with I would also be interested.

All information appreciated.

I would get in touch with superfast schools (Part of iCT4 if you have ever heard of them https://www.superfastschools.co.uk/)

I recently got a quote for our large primary school, came out to about half of what you're paying currently, (same speeds) with content filtering included. They also bundle in senso safeguarding for devices, so you can get notified if a student searches a flagged word.

Their service is great. I have another school moving to them next month. They have technicians all over the south west and even further up the line so response times and resolutions are quick.

Be sure to factor in the cost of a decent firewall if you intend to go off network, lots of routers come with them built in but you'll need to know how to get it locked down really well.
