Sharepoint

I am just trying to get my dead around SharePoint. You can install the sharepoint component with Server 2003 R2, i presume thats is free. Then you have sharepoint server 2007. What is the different do you have to pay for any of these?

Also is sharepoint included with server 2008?

I think what you've installed is Sharepoint Services rather than Sharepoint itself.

 

I'm not an expert in this field so won't add anything else.

Windows Sharepoint Services 3 (WSS3) is free and can be installed on Server 2003 and Server 2008. Sharepoint Portal Server 2007 (MOSS) is part of The MS Office family and you have to pay for it.

 

There is a workaround you need to follow to install WSS3 on Server 2008

Basically the document management and search features of MOSS are the big difference.

 

If you're just trying to get to grips, go WSS - as the full version can be pretty pricey

if you did the check box in add and remove properties in windows server r2 you will have sharepoint services (WSS) version 2 (2003)

 

You want to download WSS 3 from the Microsoft site which is the elements of MOSS 2007

You can install it on Vista but haven't tried it on XP.

I don't think its possible to install it on XP. Needs to be 2003 minimum I think.

You could always set it up in a virtual server. Both VMWare and Microsoft Virtual Server are free, but you do need a license for the O/S you are going to install.

If you do go with a VM on xp download a pre build Virtual Machine all installed and ready to go. I have used a few off these in past they are a fast and effective way to test new stuff.

Hi all, I have all the software for sharepoint MOSS and WSS. I was just wondering of any one knows of any developers or solid tutorials? I have seen some of the features of it and can't believe it is not more widespread. The feature that won me over was the docum,ent tracking aspect for aproval/denial of time off and such.

 

If anyone has any info that would be great. I have had a crack at it before running through a tutorial off you tube, but it was pretty sketchy on detail and I did'nt really understand most of it.
