Smoothwall & ChromeOS - Pre 110 / post 110 / post 127

We have a number of ChromeOS chromebooks which are on a ChromeOS of pre 110 and have expired auto support agreements.

 

As I understand we need to make provisions to use the MV2 Smoothwall extension on these devices but really they should be WEEE'd and new should be bought.

 

Devices that are running 110 and later should now be running MV3.

 

Completely understand that now i've decrypted the long winded email.

 

However, i have a question, what happens when a school has both pre ChromeOS 110 and post ChromeOS 110 devices which are shared? How do we differentiate telling Google Workspace to deploy the correct extension when the extension is pushed out to the user and not to the device?

You can't - as extensions are per-user, and that user could log in anywhere. So use the MV2 one while you still have any pre-110s about.

Can we push out both MV3 and MV2 iterations of the App? Will MV2 just stop working on devices post ChromeOS 127 and then MV3 will be used instead?

 

So the documentation should have read - Belt and Braces > apply both if you have a mix of pre 110 and post 110 devices.

Google recently announced that they will be phasing out existing MV2-based extensions starting June 2024, ahead of the launch of their MV3 Platform in June 2025. They will be starting with ChromeOS 127. Read their change update here.

 

What does this mean for your school?

 

In anticipation of Google's June 2024 deadline, Smoothwall will be releasing a new MV3 extension. Once this new extension is rolled out, schools using ChromeOS

 

We have identified that your school is currently using Chromebooks on old ChromeOS versions which will be impacted.

 

How to avoid disruptions to Smoothwall Filter:

 

You need to take one of the following actions now:

 

Update ChromeOS (recommended) - Upgrade your ChromeOS to version 110 or later Click here for details of how to do this or

 

Migrate to Smoothwall’s self-hosted version of the Chrome extension. Click here for details of how to do this

 

Please make this critical update before the end of May 2024 to avoid interruptions to your filtering service.

You should only push one. You wouldnt want 2 to install at once, and that would happen if you had 2 pushed to a 110+ device, as we are still allowed to do MV3 on self-hosted extensions for now, so you'd have both running and it would be no fun at all.

If you *didn't* get an email from us, then we have only seen chrome 110+ from you in our telemetry, so you can go back to your day and not worry.

So in short, if we still have pre ChromeOS 110 devices which aren't going away any time soon, we use the self hosted MV2 until Google block MV2 indefinitely even on ChromeOS 127 devices.
