I'm with Orange since Freeserve days and I still have the original package which is uncapped. It costs me £20 a month for a 2Mb connection. If I wanted to upgrade I would lose the uncapped service.

I was downloading some music last night and I thought it seemed fast, so I did a speed test and it showed 6.5Mb down and 512Kb up. Do you think Orange has made a mistake or have they decided to give us all the higher speed service to keep us happy?

The chances are you've been regraded to an upto 8mbit at no extra cost to yourself.

Reasons for this are aplenty:

1) Moved onto an LLU Platform at your exchange allows for 'lower' costs to the ISP. (very likely)

2) ISP cocked up and gave you a faster connection as a result. (least likely)

3) ISP don't offer support for fixed line packages any longer and regraded all lines to upto 8mbit.

Either way, check your Exchange at samknows.com and see which LLU providers you have (if any) and let us know, there may be better deals to be had!

You lucky sod, you can have Be Unlimited from your exchange, and I've heard good things generally about their service. I think there are a few members on here using it.

They were supposed to be coming to my local exchange in June, but AFAIK they havn't done it yet!

Their DNS are playing up something awful at the moment. I can download at 1.8MBps, but browsing feels like dial up!

I'm with Orange on the 8 meg service which is currently giving me 1.4. Our phone line is terrible though, the noise margins are at the bare minimum, BT still haven't found the fault after 4 engineers. :censored:

Try using OpenDNS (free)

I use Eclipse - I'm on an 8 meg package but only receive 4 meg as I live in the sticks.

The beauty about mine is I pay £30 a month for it, but it's uncontended!

That's good to know that you've had good speeds with them, but you shouldn't bet that that's anything 'they've' done so to speak.

They are however known to be expensive which I think keeps the 'heavy' users away which keeps their end of the network less contended than other providers. £30 for 50GB isn't bad at all.

Have you tried the ole' tricks to try and get a faster connection?

Posted

The 50gb is the fair usage..... It's unlimited at off-peak times (as I'm sure most of these deals are)

I think what they say is because I'm option 1 I'm further up the ladder. Meaning that if the bandwidth was between me and an option 2, 3 or 4 then I would have priority. I think that's how it works so I take it back about being uncontended.

What's these tricks then?

Posted

Yeah, that would work on their end but not at your local exchange where the first level of contention occurs.

The tricks depend wholly on how you've got your router connected, i.e whether its into the master socket, filtered faceplate, is the ring wire connected etc?

You need to grab some line stats (Downstream & Upstream SNR and Attenuation along with your sync speed).

We'll work on from there.
