Imaging Asus EEE Pc's

Hi all,

 

We have 140 of these EEE pc's - we've configured 1 or 2 to restrict students from doing certain things, but to do the same process on the other 135+ is going to take weeks!

 

Has any one had any luck in imaging, I am not that familiar with Linux (learning slowly) - so wasn't sure if It would be a similar task as doing a windows machine.

I would imagine a solution like Free Open Ghost (FOG) would be just the ticket. I set it up easily on an oldish PC (just followed the Wiki on the site using Ubuntu) and we're currently imaging linux boxes off it. Works a treat.

How did you lock them down? If it was a case of editing the config files, you could copy the edited files to the 'fresh' devices, restart and job's a gud 'un.

Get a 4/8GB SDHC card and set it up with eeebackup. Backup to an image (on the SD card) and then restore to each machine. If using the stock Xandros look up "making changes permanent" on there so that the built in factory restore restores to YOUR settings in seconds. Edited July 23, 2008 by SteveLaw

You can store an image and the imaging software on a mem stick. Boot to Imaging software then overwrite disk from mem stick. Takes about 5 mins.

 

We've removed the union file system, giving 1.9GB free instead of about 500mb, also decreases the size of the .img but stops the F9 quick restore (stops children undoing our changes).

I've created a memory stick which is bootable and gets me to the setup which gives me the option to backup, restore etc.

 

And I've put an image on another memory stick.

 

I can restore from the image on the memory stick.

 

My question is, is it possible to make this memory stick image bootable?

 

So I don't have to use 2 memory sticks each time?

I'm not sure what purpose it would serve. In order to use one memory stick you'll need both the restore software and the image on the same stick. You already have a bootable stick with the software, you only need the image on that stick now.
