ozydave Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 I need to purchase a set of 30 new laptops. I got 510 Toshiba sat pros in 2013, many are still going strong. Takes about 1 minutes to change a keyboard, about 5 minutes to change a screen, hard drive and memory easy to get to. (lost count of the number of keyboards i have had to change) Any recommendations for laptops that are just as easy to fix 🤞 Cheers
synaesthesia Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Pretty much just the higher end Latitudes or Lenovos (L/T series, not the V series) as nearly all other devices have the keyboards part of the upper chassis, and I wouldn't recommend anything Lenovo these days based on their utterly awful support/service/aftercare/poor recent build quality. 2

What problems have you had with Lenovo recently out of interest? We run ThinkPad E15s & E14s here and they are great machines, fairly accessible when it comes to repairs. Lenovo support has always been top-notch for us, especially when compared to the disasters we've had with Dell support in the past.
Dos_Box Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 I've been using a Dell Vostro for the past couple of years and it's very accessible. Very pleased with it, although the screen could do with being a tiny bit better.

The chargers supplied (large wall-warts) are too short and easily damaged, and the laptops themselves are built of the shoddiest quality plastic I've seen in a device. They're upgradable-ish other than the soldered in 4GB of ram. Their attitude to supporting them however has been dire. I would hope the higher end ones fare better!
ITGuyNW Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 We just go with the HP Elitebook 840s here. Any issues and the back can be taken off in a couple minutes.
synaesthesia Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 (edited) These are the easiest to fix laptops: https://frame.work/gb/en This is a thing of beauty. It's not far off the ability of some mid 2000 laptops - most of them could have pretty much anything added/removed including dedicated GPUs, but mmmmm. Best they won't be cheap! The 13" is for sale already. Starts at £849 with a Ryzen 7640 1
CHiLL Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Not the HP ProBook 450 G8/G9. Replacing the keyboard requires the whole laptop to be entirely disassembled. Like entirely. ozydave Posted February 9, 2024 Author Posted February 9, 2024 You do know it’s 2024 right? Sometimes where I work it feels like we are years behind :-) 1

Chris_Cook Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 I do like my personal Framework laptop, but not sure I'd use it for students. The bezel is just held on with magnets, so will be pulled off frequently. As above the side modules would go as well, and at £10-20 each that's going to get expensive. They do take a bit of work to get out though, and would save you from port damage. I wasn't impressed with the recent data breach either. Otherwise its a great laptop for Staff. 1

LeMarchand Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Absolutely! I'll get in touch next week! 1
