UNISON sent me the following this morning, though its also open for non-union members to complete.

Preproom.org, UNISON and Technical Champions in association with #TECHOGNITION have today launched a national survey of technicians working in UK secondary schools, sixth forms and FE colleges.

 

In order for us to continue to raise the profile of technicians and help them receive the recognition they deserve, it is important to better understand the challenges technicians face in their roles, to identify areas in which they need better support and ultimately use that information to shape the assistance and resources we and our associates provide.

 

If you are a technician in a UK school or college, your participation in this survey is very much appreciated. By taking the time to share your experiences, you will be helping us create a detailed snapshot of the technician landscape in 2024.

Fell over at an early question: Do we work in the ICT/IT Department? Most of us are whole school, and we work across departments, although I'm probably over thinking things? (It's quite an important distinction vs some other technician roles in school?)

Surely you work in the IT department? As in the department for supporting IT which can exist in parallel to the department for teaching IT. And some IT departments only have one person in them...

Yeah, imho you're overthinking...

 

 

But personally I take this part of a description of department - "dealing with a specific area of activity" rather than 'activity in a specific area', although a lot of times it's the same thing!

 

I guess you are talking about someone like a DT/Art/Science technician who only works within a certain confine/set of rooms but I would still say we work in the IT 'department' even though our role requires us to do our work wherever. Although I know what you mean, if you're sent to the Geography/History/English or Art department, you go to a certain set of rooms...

I'm the sole IT person but I'd like to think I'm the 'IT department' lol... now I'm not sure...

I went to do this, but it mainly refers to technicians and not managers (Our role is slightly different, although of course we get our hands dirty!)

To differentiate between the IT Department (Curriculum) and us, we describe ourselves as the "ICT Support Department" - anyway, I'm going off-topic. I'll try and do the form later.

Surely first and foremost your a Technician, you manage people(other technicians) and a computer network

You have done the job of a Technician, so you will know the job just like those you manage.

Don't let a job title put you off it. They are querying the sector, the more that fill it in, the better.

My job is actually Curriculum Technician whatever that is. But nobody has ever called me that in my 15 years here, I am the ICT Technician. On the form I haven't selected IT/ICT as that could be construed as the IT Teaching part, I wrote IT Support. As for the question "How well do you feel your employer understands your job role?", well
