Hi Edugeeker's

 

I have deployed around 40 Unifi 6 Enterprise access points but keep seeing that the AP's are rebooting.

When I look on the switches I seeing warning's that the port the AP is plugged into is over the current indication .E.g. Port 2/5 PD Over Current Indication and then it shows the reboot\ loss of power to the AP E.g. Port 2/5 PD Removed, Port 2/5 is now offline.

 

When I check usage on the switch gui the usage is around 12-13w but seems to go higher and then encounter the issue (I have seen the devices draw around 28-32w around this time which is not correct)

 

The switches are Aruba 2930F models - JL558A\JL256A (occurs on switches in stack and those not in a stack)

Anyone came across this before or have any ideas? (method used for POE delivery?)

Edit: Don't think it's related to POE output of the switches - Used 71W remaining 669W (not using POE Injectors)

We had issues with some U6 Enterprises that were POE related. They can pull up to 22W. Fixed by using Unifi's own POE+ adaptor which can deliver up to 30W. So while the switch might not have reached its POE budget the port might have.

 

There is an option on the U6 Enterprise to put it in low power mode that turned off 6Ghz and significantly drops the POE requirements. Cold try that and see if the reboot persist - doubt you have many 6Ghz clients.

 

If using the ppsk I'd also use the current RC firmware which has a load of stability and ppsk specific fixes.

We had this exact issue with 2930F's & UniFi 6E AP's recently. Aruba blamed UI & UI blamed Aruba. In the end we found putting the AP's into low performance mode and getting some powder-coated (non-conductive) brackets from UI support did the trick for us. Contact their support and they'll send you some for free. Out of interest are your APs mounted to dropped ceiling rails?

It might not be the switch backplane POE capacity that's the problem there is on most switches a per port limit i.e a limit of the power that can be fed to each AP - 13watts for POE, 25.5watts POE+ and 50/70 watts on POE++

 

I believe your Aruba are POE+ so up to 25.5watts only? If you've seen 32 watts measured then that's probably the issue.

Thanks for this, looking back at one of the switches it hasn't happened for the last 6 days so the low performance mode seems to have helped. As PotnoodleTeach said the devices were going over the POE class allocation which I assume is due to some difference in technology in relation to allocation of POE (one to look at when quieter in school)

On the subject of POE allocation. They're Type 2 Class 4 POE+ which the Aruba's should provide up to 30ish Watts for. However when I plugged in our network tester to test the POE the 2930F was only outputting 15W despite the tester asking for full Type 2 Class 4 power. Interesting one.

This isn’t specific to this model of AP. Just a general observation with POE. Maybe POE devices use LLDP to determine the required power consumption. When it’s disabled it can be inaccurate. I have seen POE phones reboot when they rang due to not having enough power. Enabling LLDP fixed it.

Having the same issues with some new U7-Pro Max APs on an Aruba 2930M. Seems to not be putting out enough power causing the AP to brown out and reboot when running a speed test through it.

 

Looking at the switch I can see that the AP is requesting 25w but the switch is only allocating 13W.

 

Setting the port to allocate by value sorts it, but looking for a more elegant solution. Seems strange as the switch is aware the AP is requesting more but just doesn't want to offer it in the default poe configuration.

Is LLDP-MED enabled on your switch? This is used to automatically identify the power requirements of POE devices.

 

Have you checked the POE budget of the switch to check if your switch had enough power remaining to go around?

Also worth checking the specs of the UPS (if any) the switches are connected through - these have caused issues for us especially when switches reboot and the combined startup rush current of connected PoE devices is enough to cause issue. (Aruba 6200 and UniFi 6e)
