Can I recover a folder deleted from the server...?

Hello All

 

I hope someone can save me from being lynched by a teacher!

 

Whilst on their class machine (XP Pro) and fiddling about with their documents on their network drive (Windows Server 2003) I managed to delete a folder with ALL their Activstudio flipcharts in! They don't know yet, so I am hoping to fix the problem before they come back in on Monday.

 

Obviously it's not in the Recycle Bin so any advice on where or how I can recover it, if at all, would greatly appreciate please.

 

I have looked at a couple of the old threads on this sort of issue, but I'm not sure if they exactly apply to my problem. However, if someone knows that it is covered somewhere else then please direct me to it.

 

Sorry, I am new in this job, which is a change of career for me also, plus I am the only one in the school looking after the ICT, so I'm having great fun as you can imagine!

Do you have any backups ?

If not, you can try and undelete [ recuva ] prog thats on the Admin Bar - [ see below ] - if that does not work there are other un-delete type programs around.....

Do you have shadow copies set up on your server?

google for testdisk6.9 and you want to use photorec this should get the files back but it does not keep the file names or folders from what i have seen. but it does work.

The data wasn't on the server long enough to be backed up unfortunately. And no, the previous technician had not set up Shadow Copies on the drive...oh how I wish he had!

 

Thanks for the other tips. I presume I use any such software directly on the server, am I right?

Yes, but you should for the best results stop anything else being written to the drive.

Try a file recovery piece of software as soon as poss.

 

I used to use this one [well... a older version of it] CONVAR & PCinspector Data Recovery Datenrettung recupero dati datarecovery récupération données which used to do the trick, sometimes a while after the event, but you should get finding straight away if its important stuff.

Thanks again, I'll get to work on it ASAP, which unfortunately won't be until Monday now as I only work PT (7-9:30 on Friday's), but hopefully it won't be too late!

I tried Recuva first, but it just kept seizing after a few hours, so then I tried PC Inspector, which took ages (over 12 hours!), but that eventually allowed me to grab back some files, which I hope will be the right thing when I see the teacher shortly. Fingers crossed. I now know for next time (if, and I hope it doesn't, the need arises).
