neonetman Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Good afternoon all, I'm busy switching MDM on a number of our iPads. If I switch the MDM provider in Apple School Manager, will the iPad automagically pick up the change, or will I need to reset the iPad first?
Cat_Jam148 Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Apple School Manager will only change the MDM when the iPad is reset and being provisioned. The iPad asks ASM during setup which MDM it should connect to and that is then end of it as far as i'm aware. Switched from Mosyle to Meraki a little while ago and spent most of the summer resetting iPads
choll Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 It'll push automatically to the new MDM, but won't rebuild itself. You'll have to do an initial setup on the MDM for the device and then do a full wipe. Interested to know which MDM you are using?
jmak Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Has anyone used Manage Engine MDM? As per one of my other threads, we're looking at manage engine for patch deployment. We could upgrade to their all singing all dancing endpoint management bundle for less than the cost of Patch Manager + Jamf and get a whole load of other useful stuff.

Incorrect ASM supports multiple MDM’s at the same time, in this scenario when you reset the iPad you will have to choose or assign the iPad to the MDM of your choice and then build a prestige enrolment if not. If once you have wiped all of the iPads you can delete the old MDM, you have to turn on “auto assign” in ASM, build a profile in the MDM. When you activate the iPad it will auto assign to the single MDM in ASM.
mthomas08 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Sorry to wake up an old thread. Which Apple MDM do people recommend? I'm assuming there isn't anything free out there? I just want something simple and basic.

Previously used Jamf but its horribly expensive and not as nice an interface.
Reverend_Dan Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 Ive just set up Intune over the summer to do it with 100 iPads, federated apple to azure so everyone gets a iCloud account linked to their school email. Since we already have Intune for our pcs worked out as a non added cost. Works quite nicely appart from having to sign in multiple times to get to the point of a fully managed device. But that may be how I followed the guides. 1
TheHyperTechie Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 Previously moved our ~100 iPads from Lightspeed @ £6.50 a license, to Mosyle which is completely free. Took a while to do, but honestly Mosyle has so much functionality, even the free version. The only thing you basically lose by using the free option is the ability to do operations in bulk e.g. update all of the iPads at once. I have used Jamf in the past, and that was also very good.

Mosyle is actually cheaper too if you do opt for the paid version. I agree it has plenty of features, we used the free version for well over a year with no issue. (on a class set of 34 iPads) 1
Cat_Jam148 Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 Mosyle free is great for small deployments. Once we went past 200 devices though, it was decided that we needed more than what it offered and moved to Meraki. I would've stuck with Mosyle but the LGFL started offering the licenses for Meraki as part of our subscription, and well you can't beat free?

The free version looks good - although it does seem to be quite a setup process. Do you have M365 integration setup? Edit: Thank you to everyone replying it is helping. I assumed Apple online would allow me to manage the basics but not so.. I got the sync to M365 working and devices there but can't download apps on the ipad. Edited October 1, 2024 by mthomas08
PotNoodleTech Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 Using free version of mosyle here for about 70 ipads. I think the interface it a bit clunky but it works. No real issues with our ipads can instlal software lock them down etc.
mthomas08 Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 Thank you everyone - so far so good. The only question I have now is, how do I set the time/date location setting. I've gone through Mosyle/Apple and every setting I can find is London. yet, the time is still default US/Pacific on the ipads even after the Mosyle wipe. Managed to setup the Apps and Wi-Fi, so a wipe will restore all these for me - GREAT. Just this one little niggle is eluding me.... the time zone. A google hasn't helped. Mosyle support page hasn't helped. Either that or I contact them direct.
