Google sheets, no right-click paste...?

The latest instalment of our continually painful & annoying journey into Google... and I'm even more confused then usual...

 

Teacher comes to tell me that a certain computer isn't allowing right-click paste... Armed with my years of Microsoft experience and extensive knowledge of Office issues, I walk into the ICT suite and find they are now working on 'Google Sheets' and not on Excel...

 

Well, now I've done a bit of research it would appear this is expected behaviour (wtf)... Well OK, whatever... something about allowing browser access to the OS (I kind of get the reason behind it of course and I've found out it's not a new problem, just new to me). But I guess if that's how it is, that's how it is...

 

However, just as I'm about to shrug my shoulders and tell the teacher, "Google, hey.. what can you do...?!" he drops the bombshell that's it's working on all the other computers...

 

On this one computer though, it comes up with this... like you have to install a Chrome extension or something to right-click paste... but I've just read the default behaviour is to not allow it and they certainly don't have different extensions installed.

 

 

On the MS side, all the same computers, all the same OS, all the same type of pupil accounts, with all the same GPOs applied and on the Google side, all the same type of pupil accounts, in the same OU, with all the same settings applied...

 

I've been into the ICT suite myself and tried it, one machine lets me and the other doesn't.

I've checked that the other children couldn't have installed the Chrome add on, when I click on the 'Install' button it takes me to the Play Store and gives this error...

 

 

However, it works on my computer without installing anything... so either it's not default behaviour, or it's a permissions thing in Google Workspace, but then that doesn't make sense because all the children are set up the same...

 

So it's a Chrome thing, but all the computers have the same install and the same GPOs applied...

 

Anyway, I tested it on 2 ICT Suite computers side by side. Logged on to both PCs as the same user, logged into Chrome/Google as the same user.... one let me right-click paste, the other didn't!

So is the extension installed on any of the Chrome instances?

I have similar issues on my machine but hasn't bothered me enough to look into it. If I right click to copy/paste it doesn't work and tells me to install an addon but if I use Ctrl + C and Ctrl +v it works fine.

I've got round this issue by installing the following 2 apps on the top level of our Google Workspace domain:

 

Google Drive: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-drive/apdfllckaahabafndbhieahigkjlhalf

Google Docs Offline: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-docs-offline/ghbmnnjooekpmoecnnnilnnbdlolhkhi

 

Deploy them on your top level OU via Devices > Chrome > Apps and extensions > Users and browsers (Force Install)

 

That should hopefully resolve the issue for you.

I have a feeling that, on the contrary, such problems arise because of some browser extensions. I also started experiencing double-click issues in google sheets. Instead of selecting the cell, it opens directly for editing, which I don’t want. And this happens sporadically and only in google sheets. I can’t find which extension is causing this; I need to spend a whole day disabling each one individually.

Sometimes it’s just clipboard permissions in Chrome. You can check by typing chrome://settings/content/clipboard in the browser and see if anything looks off. Could also be something with how the system policies are set up if these computers are managed—clipboard access can get blocked without anyone noticing.

Honestly, stuff like this is why I lean more on Excel for anything serious. If you’re into Excel or need tips, https://excel.tv/ is pretty solid for practical tricks and fixes.

Right click in Google Sheets bring up the menu:

 

You can also use crtl - c/v/x etc and to be one up on excel ctrl-shift-v which I use also of the time. Never seen it not been an option.
