Zoom7000 Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I've just installed VMWare Server on my Windows Server 2008 box and I am trying to create a VM. When I start VMWare Server Console it asks for a Host to connect to. Obviously I don't have one as it is the first time I am running it. I am trying to create a New VM, but the option is greyed out in "File > New > Virtual Machine" Anyone know why? How can I create a new VM?
Jona Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 The "host" to connect to is localhost, It's designed as a client->server setup. Connect to localhost which will connect you to the host vmware server where you can create new "virtualmachines".... Clear as mud! Jona
Zoom7000 Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 I've tried typing in localhost and the Administrator username and password and the error I get is: There was a problem connection: Cannot connect to host localhost: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it
Jona Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 When I last did a clean install of VMware server I specified localhost and no username / password and it seemed to work.... Did you set a password on install? Jona
localzuk Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I don't think VMWare server works on Server 2008 yet. Or it didn't the last time I checked (about 2 months ago). The VMWare service couldn't start.

Might explain the OPs connection problem. Some discussion of VMware with 2k8 here: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/132629;jsessionid=BF8755BA422CE20E16F66A0946E5F419?tstart=15
somabc Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Is there not problem with signed drivers and Server 2008, it might just be the 64bit version I'm thinking of. Do you have Hyper-V?
Jackd Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I've tried typing in localhost and the Administrator username and password and the error I get is: You dont need to type in the user and password for using localhost you should have a radio button option to check that says localhost and that should grey out the host/user/pass boxes. If there is no localhost option that means the service is not running or it cant communicate with the service for some reason Jack

We're running VMWare Server 2.0 RC1 on Server 2008 64-bit, and it's been fine (aside from picking non-standard ports for the web-interface to run on - netstat from the command line helped us figure out what they were though). We use it to run our Ubuntu web-server (much easier to keep Apache et al updated that way). Steve
