Shared iPads - is there a point?

Well 3 weeks into the new job and time to shake it up......

 

mods feel free to move if not in the correct place!

 

Currently trying to get my brain around the iPad deployment option chosen at the school ( SMT all seem new to, so unsure what decisions were made in the past)

 

6th upwards gen iPads all on shared iPads with federated accounts: is there actually a good reason to do this?

 

i cant get my head around it and am at a loss, especially with the memory usage etc. Federated accounts would not let them do what they need anyway i think.

 

Before i go to SMT wanting to revamp the lot to no accounts etc (except for those that need garage band etc) can anyone give me a good reason for this?

Is this 1:1 or shared carts? If shared then "no accounts" is gonna turn messy real quick as everyone will be signed in to everyone else email/google/etc and if you mix teachers into the ipad usage too you'll end up with a guaranteed data breech at some point.

 

If you think telling the pupils to "make sure you log out of google" is going to work then I am afraid your in for a shock.

 

We moved from ipads to chromebooks for the pupils and haven't looked back. Open Chromebook - login - learn all within 120 seconds. 5 lessons a day every day.

not a 1:1 deployment, 90% sure students don't "log in" to apps - but teachers seem to

 

staff require iPads for assessment purposes-- and need to log into the app separately - so apple account not required except for very specific things-- i.e. garage band

 

previous employment, student stuff worked well with no log ins.. they were used for "learning games" rather than apps such as email, word etc.

 

thinking of seperating the estate down to teacher and pupil ipads and then figuring out teaching and learning aims---- but i have to have the conversation first i think./

If users are signing in to "shared ipads" with federated accounts they may well be saving work to icloud. Each federated account gets 200gb of icloud storage.

 

Our music department work this way as it enables students to work on garageband projects across iOS and MacOS devices.
