Recently after some refurb work at the school we had to put 2 switches into what was a storage cupboard. Now we have had to add another switch and an Amplifier for the PA system which overall is now causing the room to be very warm. One of the switches is showing iminent fan failure. I want to find a way to cool the room. Is the only option to get AC installed?

Air flow will work, if you can drastically improve it. AC should be unnecessary unless it's in a very warm space otherwise (near boilers/water tanks/sweaty teenagers). Can you vent it to outside (high in the space), with a large vent low in the door to draw in cool(ish) internal air?

I have a similar switch cabinet with three big PoE switches in it. I drilled holes in the plastic front door, which allows me to keep it secure but vent much better.

A vent at the bottom of the door and one at the top might suffice. Failing that maybe a AC infinity AV cabinet fan or similar, maybe with a temp sensor so you know the heat without opening the door. Are there any noise restrictions?

There is a wall vent that goes out to the corridor. The Premises Manager is looking to see if he can replace that with an extractor fan.

That smells of breaching a fire zone. Be careful, you may do it, provided a smoke stop shutter is fitted.

We fitted vents top and bottom in the server cupboard, door but a couple of large case 12v. fans in the top vent to push hot air out into the main storeroom. Just remember to vac. the dust out now and then!
