Mosyle Manager - Restrict Safari and Chrome

We have one ipad which a student needs to use and i think i've got most of the stuff i need to get working on it however i've got one last thing to get working and that is the blocking of Safari / Chrome on the ipad.

 

I've got Safari and Chrome added to the block / restricted apps list in Mosyle however it's not applying to the ipad.

 

Hopefully someone can help / assist with where i'm going wrong. Chrome and Safari need blocking as we are using Smoothwall and their Smoothwall App for device filtering.

 

Also, what is "Supervision Required" and how does one get these "Supervision Required" policies applied to iPads as it seems these supervision required policies are not working.

 

Do I need a MAC or something apple-ly to get this ipad into supervision required mode? Is this only through Apple Configurator 2? If so, i think i might tell the parent to buy a ChromeOS tablet and let said child use that! After all, we aren't an apple school, but we are a Google School / MS School.

The iPad is built Supervised with AC2 using a Mac. This involves a wipe of the OS - at least it has in my experience - then it's rebuilt in Supervised Mode.

 

There's only so much you can do without that.

Smoothwall app / browser is installed on the device but when the student is at school they can eirher use the Smoothwall app or the VLAN the device is on has the SSL login page session cookie which works if using safari / chrome.

 

As this device was not bought via the school and is not school owned, i just want to make sure the school is kept safe whilst browsing net

Glad you got it sorted. I've found mosyle to be pretty good (have only used for shared devices thus far)

Hi Timbo, how did you configure the Smoothwall browser app? Our current setup is to allow use of chrome and safari but they have both stopped working since we updated our https cert for our Wi-Fi.

 

Removed the old one uploaded the new cert shows installed on the Ipad's but just keeps throwing up no secure connection for both browsers, just wondering if the smoothwall browser app maybe be a better option?

We pushed the MITM certificate out to the ipad and we were going to using the Smoothwall browser app until we heard about the Google Sign in button on the SSL and Non-SSL login pages. This means the student can sue Chrome, Safari or the Smoothwall App.

 

So what we've done is created a VLAN just for this student (because this is the only ipad we have on site). The web proxy auth settings are set as transparant with Non-SSL login page as auth screen.

 

When the user comes in on a morning, they are asked to fire up a browser and sign in with Google. This allows up to 300mins of proxy time (authentication > settings) of browsing / using apps.

 

This works for us.

There’s now a version of AC2 for iOS

 

Apple Configurator for iOS is just for adding devices to Apple School Manager and doesnt have the same functionality as Apple Configurator on a Mac.
