A counterpart at another school in Birmingham got in touch with me at the weekend. Unfortunately the school was broken into and a SMART board was stolen. They’ve asked for me to share this with as many people as possible, so that they know to refuse and report if it turns up.

On the plus side, their asset register was up to date so they know exactly what was taken. It serves as a reminder to make sure that your asset registers are updated regularly, especially with all the changes that take place during the summer holidays.

We had a projector stolen at my last school. In our case, it was an education-specific model and they'd managed to gain entry and whip it away without showing their face. We'd reported the theft and since we'd kept records of serial numbers, the reason we managed to get it back was because a) said person didn't stop at us with their life of crime & b) police had noted that the projector wasn't the type that the average consumer could normally buy so cross-checked our reported S/N with the one on the projector they'd seized.

 

Like you say, keeping an asset register up to date is crucial if you want any hope in seeing stolen equipment again.

We had some vandalism overnight a couple of summers back. Students threw bricks and paving slabs at our windows for a few nights in a row.

 

We managed to identify one of the students by tying up the Wifi radius logs with the CCTV.

 

If you let your students connect their phones to the school wifi, it might be worth checking these logs.

At the company I work for, asset checks are done every year like a stock check. Its a great way to find what has been moved elsewhere from where it was put when it was new/moved by IT.
