Hi,

 

We have three new eaton power supplies arriving next week (our old ones are way out of warranty so basically got told to do a full replace).

 

One ups is repacing our backup server which is fine.

 

The other 2 are going into our main server cabinet, i had a look today and realised 4 of the ports wasn't being used but they were plugged in across the ups's.

 

We have a dell vtrx with 4 power supplies in it, some other server which is on but don't know what its used for.

 

Would you recommend i keep the current setup with 2 UPS in one cabinet or put one in the server cabinet and one in the other cabinet? (the other cabinet has our main aruba switch and our nvr)

 

The new ups are EATON 5SC 2200VA TOWER / RACK 2U UPS

I'd put one in for your servers and the other to feed the other cabinet, I'd split the server PSUs (Assuming you can survive on 2 PSUs in the VRTX) between mains and the UPS. So should the UPS fail the server still has power. We had an APC unit fail a few months ago which knocked everything out.

We have 4 power supplies but 2 blades and then the SAN part and that other server has 2 power supplies in it (i don't know what it is that it does or if its even used anymore until i fully have a look, i just know its a Dell EMC VNXe 3100 )

I agree - we also had a single APC fail a couple of weeks ago on the main cabinet and everything was dead without warning.

I know UPS's can fail suddenly and for no apparent reason, but the only reason I've had a catastrophic UPS failure was a lightning strike. The UPS saved the server, so I wouldn't plug a server directly into the mains. Maybe split the supply across the two UPS's? And make use of the (parachute?) UPS monitoring software which might give advance warning if issues with the UPS?

Two UPS's split across the server PSUs is the best way to do it as you still have mains filtering and protection on all connections - but can tolerate one UPS failing in an emergency, and you double your average runtime to boot.

 

Been running 2 x UPS on 2 x different power phases for over a decade. (we've had situation before where one entire phase has gone down across the whole school which completely took out the server room. That won't happen again.)
