JATSO Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 So we ordered some new NAS drives (Seagate 8TB Ironwolf), one of them was DOA so I sent it back. They have sent me a replacement a recertified drive. Thoughts welcome before I open the bag?
Primus Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I personally wouldn't accept a recertified drive in place of a brand new one that was DOA. 2
Jawloms Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I'd imagine a recertified drive is cheaper to buy then a new one, and you paid for a new one. 2
CHiLL Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I also wouldn't accept it, it's not what you ordered. There is a value difference between brand new and recertified and I presume they didn't send you the price difference back along with the recertified drive. 1
JATSO Posted June 20, 2023 Author Posted June 20, 2023 Just checked the warranty status of the replacement and its the same as the other one. Seems a bit cheeky to me though, I might have a word with the account manager.
localzuk Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 If it were DOA, the return should've been to your supplier rather than a warranty replacement - as most warranties will send out recertified disks in my experience. Your original supplier should be sending you the new one IMO. 1
JATSO Posted June 20, 2023 Author Posted June 20, 2023 Waiting for a response I have emailed the account manager.

If it was the supplier then they should have sent you a new one, if you sent it back to the manufacturer under a warranty claim then a recertified drive is fairly normal as they'll see if they can repair your DOA one and then send that one out as a warranty replacement to someone else.

It was organised through our supplier they gave me the RMA not their supplier, so the onus is on the my supplier to swap out the drive not theirs which is what they have done as the recertified drive came from their supplier direct. Our supplier is contacting his supplier as to why a recertified drive was sent out? Its like me walking into a shop and buying something, its faulty I want a new replacement or a refund not a repaired item for the same price. If they cant supply a new one, just say so and issue a refund, I can then shop somewhere else with the refund.

Unfortunately that's consumer law and does not apply to businesses/schools/academies. It will be whatever is in your contract/agreement with your particular supplier (or even your suppliers supplier as each company will have it's own timeframe to claim DOA) - it is typically 7, 14 or 30 days for DOA claims to be made and then you're on your own with the manufacturers warranty unless you have a maintenance contract or something with your supplier. As long as you reported it straight away they should send you out another new drive (not a recertified drive) or issue you with a credit note. 1
