RDP Slow

Hi all - Im pulling what little hair i have left out over RDP performance issues.

 

A little background. We have 40 thin clients (old laptops) repurposed using no touch os.

 

I have configured 2 servers on vmware as hosts. Both A decent spec.

 

We use sophos central as our endpoint on the servers.

 

No matter what i do it seems that as soon as users start to use edge it kills the server.

 

Im just looking for some best practice here. Surely others have had similar experiences.

When you say decent spec - what spec are you giving the 2 RD Session hosts? Cores/RAM? Also, what storage is running behind it?

When you mention that Edge slows it, I'd straight away be looking at storage and also RAM allocation and sharing. Those servers would need fast SSDs for 40 clients and enough RAM to meet the needs of each client using 1GB+ just for the browser.

Currently 80gb ram and 8vcpu.

It's load balanced so really only 20 per server.

It's literally edge that brings it to it's knees.

Done all of the obvious. Ending disconnected sessions etc etc.

Storage could be the issue. I'll have to check that.

Look at the virtualisation settings. Edge will use virtualisation if it's available. Nested virtualisation can be a real performance killer.

As a test have you tried another browser i.e. Chrome? Have you done any monitoring for when you open Edge? Even just running performance monitor looking at CPU, RAM and Disk I/O should help point you in the right direction.

 

If it looks to be disk related it may be worth checking if your Antivirus product, thinks like on-demand scanning doesn't always play nicely.

Hi yes its CPU. Edge smashing CPU. Im sure a bit of tweaking with vmware will sort it.
