snagrat Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 We have a lease line that terminates into a wall box. The two yellow pigtails hang out of this, one of which plugs into the ADVA box. I need to move this about 5m but moving the actual cables is not possible. I want to extend the yellow pigtail. Does anyone know what type of fibre this is? It must be Single Mode. OM1 I assume?
Oaktech Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 I'd call the supplier and explain... Some of the termination boxes just have connectors inside and the tails can be extended just with new plug in tails, sometimes they need to be spliced in. If you touch them and something goes wrong the rectification fee from the supplier will be atronomical so it's better to let them do it themselves even if there is a fee. 1
PotNoodleTech Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 If it's openreach box then probably don't touch it with a barge pole as they're very finnicky. They extended mine from one side of the school to the other for free just because I asked and explained nicely why the fibre and switches needed to be in the server room rather than the main office.
Michael Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 I've bought/used this in the past from a Virgin fibre tray to the media converter. Please double check, but it's most likely FC > LC that you'll need. FC looks very similar to ST at first glance, but the physical connectors are different. Best thing is take one of the pair out, out of hours to double check and take a picture.
Michael Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 Also (just my view), for the sake of 5m I wouldn't extend. I would definitely want a single cable where you know where the ends terminate. Finding a joint 5 years down the line (say it's in conduit) could prove to be counter productive!

You can, but Openreach will get angry and if you've every an issue your ISP will get charged which they'd need to pass on. I'd suggest you let your ISP know and instruct Openreach to move it for you, which they will do but they'll obviously charge for the privilege. Dave 1
