Android Tablet for 9 yo

For friends 9yo child any suggestions?

 

Needs to be reasonably good at streaming media (Spotify, BBC sounds some YouTube), homework (think they use Google) and have an mini SD card slot for some extra storage. 10 inch screen and budget of around £100.

 

I picked up a tablet a few years back but it is no longer available and was a fairly cheap one, charger is awful mini USB so a USB-C charging port would be better.

 

He had one but unfortunately it has bitten the dust.

Lenovo M10 plus 3rd Gen. Bought one for my son from Argos and was so impressed I bought one for myself. Comes with a free Lenovo clock at the moment.

Comes in a bit more than £100 unfortunately but Lenovo stuff is far better quality than most other manufacturers.

That does look pretty good, I bought a Fire HD 8 for myself a month back (cheap option for Home Automation control panel) but they cost a bit more for 10 inch.

I have the Fire HD10 for the 8yo. Got it on one of the Amazon days for £89. Does everything he needs it to.

Regret that I have given up with the Fire tablets. The lack of Play Store was a real deal breaker. I know that they can have Play Store side loaded but this seems a bit like buying a diesel car and then trying to convert it to petrol! And the fact that Fire tablets are now no cheaper except when they sell off the old stock just before releasing a new model. Edited May 19, 2023 by OldTimeIT

I know this a bit of a thread necro, but I thought it would be a good place (as it was the only result that came up in search discussing new Android tablets for non-education use) to mention my new tablet.

 

My old one's battery was dying, on Android 9 and was getting very slow for web page rendering, and nothing in the past couple of year fitted my budget. As I only use it for light browsing, social media and non-intensive apps, I don't feel the need to spend £300+ on a device.

This then came up - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CWRW4KZJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details - It was on sale for £109 (currently £149) and I would highly recommend it for anyone who just needs a tabet for light use or media playback.

 

Not the fastest spec, but is on Android 14, has a good screen, is responsive and is sturdy and light.

If you are in the market for a new tablet then it may be worth waiting for the next Amazon sale, or just keeping an eye on prices. My only niggle is that it seems to be designed to work in landscape mode (will rotate to portrait fine) with the speakers sitting each side of the screen.

Oh, and my last tablet was from Teclast too and I got enough use out of it to be happy their kit was built well enough
