Chr1sM Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Hi, I want to be able to extend my desktop so I can work privately and easily control an application on the extended screen. The extended screen is not easily visible to me. Is there a way for me to remotely control the shared application on the extended screen on the primary monitor? Kind of like remoting into the extended screen. Thanks, Chris
DavR Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 If you're using extended desktop, my understanding is that this is using two monitors as one big monitor. I don't think there is a way to remotely control an application from one side of your desktop to the other. It sounds like you're either looking at running that app blind, or, using duplicate displays instead. That said, it does depend on the application. What are you using on the blind screen? It may be that there is a secondary way to control that. Eg, an Intranet page could be displayed in a web browser, but you could be looking at the backend in a different program at the same time.
jthompson Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 You might be able to make use of a VNC utility to connect to your current machine and have a window containing your entire [extended] desktop. You may end up Dr Who'ing into an infinity mirror, though.
DaveTheTech Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 My first thought was it should be possible because OBS captures it. Something fancy with virtual desktops? Theres a post on how to do this with VNC, might be worth testing: multiple monitors - How do I get VNC to only serve up a specific display in windows? - Super User Theres a remark about tightVNC vs realVNC
Chr1sM Posted April 27, 2023 Author Posted April 27, 2023 Any application really on the extended desktop. It would be nice to retain the privacy of the primary monitor and control of the extended monitor locally.
bald_pig Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 I'd suggest getting a third monitor, and duplicating that with the extended screen.
Chr1sM Posted April 27, 2023 Author Posted April 27, 2023 That's not an option as I move between rooms but you have me thinking about the problem in a different way, thanks.
