Reduce PDF file sizes - PDF optimisers, ideally Open Source

I have a need to shrink a small number of PDFs. I don't believe we have Adobe Pro, so I'm wondering if anyone has used any safe Open Source PDF optimizers that they'd recommend.

I'll have a look at that. Shortly after posting, I found https://www.adobe.com/uk/acrobat/online/compress-pdf.html offers an option for one file at a time. I guess they hope to tempt you into buying Pro by showing how useful it is. I went for medium quality which reduced my file by 50%, which was just what I needed.

PrimoPDF is a PDF printer utility that gives you control over the output quality. Just watch that you opt out of any naffware during the installation wizard.

https://www.ghostscript.com/blog/optimizing-pdfs.html is an open source one mainly lossy compression of the images is 90% of the saving with PDFs , and also with Tesseract OCR is really good for OCR batch conversion Edited March 21, 2023 by ittech2342323

Similar capabilities, but I'm a fan of https://www.ilovepdf.com/ suite, and often recommend it to staff with simple PDF tweaking needs.

 

With my DP head on though, never use free web tools with confidential documents, as you are potentially sharing with a third party.

A good point that I realised needs considering before we we make any decisions to roll out a solution. Wisely, we have an outsourced DPO who gladly advise us after reading the companies data protection statements.
