Hi all

We have a old server 2008 that has RDP User cal installed.

Can i setup a new fresh server 2022 and then install the cal from that to this new server, or would it only be licensed for 2008 server?

If so what is best practice? a migration of license or fresh install?

It depends if your RDP User Cals included Software Assurance to enable them to work on newer server versions.

If your User Cals were purely for Windows Server 2008 (such as purchased on a Select scheme and not OVS-EES), then you can not use them on a Windows 2022 Server and you will need to purchase new ones.

If they have Software Assurance because they are part of your OVS-EES agreement, then if the licence broker service is installed onto another physical server you need to do nothing. If the broker was on the old 2008 box, then you need to add the licences on the newer server by entering your product key and values.
