I have been handed 2 faulty iPad's, both are about 2 years old and not under warranty.

One has a really cracked screen, the other just a black screen, although I can hear sounds coming from it when I press the volume buttons, so it does still seem to be working.

At another school a few years ago, I took an iPad with a faulty screen into the Apple store and they said the screen was more expensive than a new tablet and not worth fixing.

Is it worth trying to get these fixed, or should we replace them and perhaps get accidental damage cover?

Usually they don't bother fixing the brocken screens and will just replace the device at a slightly cheaper rate than buying brand new.

As for the black screen, you might have curtain mode turned on. This is usually turned on by a gesture on the screen such as using three fingers to triple-tap the screen: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201443

We had this, I laughed at the quote. More expensive than the darn iPad.

Paid 230 for the iPad, quote was £270 and that was through our reseller...

Took it to a local shop for £60 in the end.

Local places will often replace a screen for less than £100.

For the black screen one - have you got access to an adapter to plug it in to an external screen? Might help narrow down what it's (not)doing.

Depends really. In a previous job we had over 1,000 ipads, and were sending at least half a dozen every week, often more to a local repairer. Apple's repair prices were terrible, and even basic repairs were often quoted at more than the cost of the device, but a reputable 3rd party used to charge (albeit a fair few years ago) quite reasonable prices, with even the ipad that the kid bent in a vice coming in less than £200 to repair (and not just using the cheapest possible parts), with the agreement where accidental damage was covered, deliberate damage would be invoiced to parents

You can get the parts on Amazon, but its not an easy job.

I'd probably go for a local company for repair if we get another one. Luckily we don't have many ipads.
