jamf school setup help

just finding my way with jamf school:

 

I've created a static device group Students with some profiles (for wifi, certs, restrictions) and apps and added the ipads.

 

So far so good but now I'd like to tweak a few things:

 

What is best way to remove apps like Photo Booth (jamf lists these under "internal apps") ?

 

GarageBand won't start as it asks me to sign in (these are not shared ipads)

jamf lists these (pages, imovie etc) as "user installed" ?

 

Finally how to I add the ipad name to the lock screen ?

The ipads have apples preloaded fake apps.

 

You need to delete them preloaded on the ipads and redeploy the real ones, this is why youre being asked to login as its trying to associate the free apps to an account.

 

Easiest way? erase the ipad as they dont come back after a reset, only when BNIB. Ive been told it can be done with MDM but ive never had the apps convert to managed/remove remotely with success. Ive also just had the class delete them and wait for mdm to redeploy it when ive forgot

Under profiles go to lockscreen message and add %DEVICENAME%

not sure I fancy erasing all the ipads just to get rid of imovie, pages etc, maybe a manual remove job for some kids like you say

i usually just add them to the hidden apps list

how do you "hide" the apps ?

 

is looking like wiping ipad is going to be easiest way to remove garageband, imovie etc (can't trust students to delete them!)

so they don't ask user to sign in. Bit annoying as I will probably have to redeploy a few like garageband/imovie

 

actually just done a test with a brand new unboxed ipad:

connect to mac via usb

Apple Configurator 2, right-click the device and navigate to Advanced > Erase all Content and Settings.

(so removes Pre-Installed Apple Apps)

then prepare

 

seems to work ok so not too bad after all

 

wonder how many apple configurator can do at once, e.g. a trolley of 30 ?

Under Profile options there is a safelist/blocklist option. I've just blocked all the excess bloatware so it's much tidier. (About 30 apps)

 

Also are your iPads in DEP? Or do you need to manually supervise them in configurator?

yes my ipads are in DEP (apple school manager) and have been assigned to jamf

then in jamf I've assigned the "Automated Device Enrollment Profile" to the devices

 

I'm preparing them in apple configurator as I figured that was quickest way to set them up ?

I have the mac sharing it's internet "ipad usb" (thanks to @RLR for that tip) so no need to connect to wifi or add a wifi profile / blueprint

just connect to mac then prepare, leave as "automated enrollment" and its just a couple of mouse clicks.

 

If i was to just give an ipad to a teacher in the box and let them go through setup assistant and connect

it to wifi manually I guess it would enroll into Jamf but would it be supervised without being prepared in apple configurator ?

 

so far jamf looks pretty good, slight confusing when you google for help as there seem to be different versions jamf school (we have this)

jamf pro, jamf now, and the email support not great, e.g. emailed them asking how to fix iMovie asks to: sign in to App Store

and their reply /solution was "Apple has to use an Apple ID for its pre-installed Apps" !

Jamf School was previously Zulu Desk. Jamf purchased them a few years ago and re-branded it and are marketing it towards education.

 

Supervision is applied to any device that goes through your Device Enrollment Profile. You might want seperate enrollment profiles for different types of setups. For example, you might have a different setup for students than staff.

If you have them in DEP you dont need to prep, though your reset using configurator method is probably the fastest since you dont have to set them up to reset them.

 

Regarding the apps, we use jamf pro so not sure how it differs but you need to get a VPP token from ASM, add this to jamf school, then deploy the apps use device assignment(after purchasing the licences in ASM), this will register them against your VPP token/Device instead of prompting the user with app store logins.
