Jaan Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 We're thinking of giving AMD Ryzen CPUs ago on our next classroom update. Anybody made the switch? any issues? i would have thought they're cheaper. Any thoughts or responses welcomed. Cheers
mw184 Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 (edited) I've got a large deployment of Ryzen 5 2400g machines in the school. No major problems so far. The only thing I have encountered is that if the graphics driver isn't installed and is just running the windows display driver there can be issues with the machines going to sleep and refusing to wake up. Installing the AMD graphics driver in Windows Update Optional Updates fixed this issue for me, just had to amend the sleep timer but that's due to one or two setup choices in the network rather than the machines themselves. Over all very happy with them. The only other thing is that YouTube videos and some other media had half of the video in shades of green but gradual windows updates seem to have resolved that. Steve21 Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 Biggest issue we’ve found is the amount of ram they waste for graphics On our HPs it sets to 2GB ram reserved for graphics bringing 8gb machines down to 6gb and there’s no option in the HP bios to reduce this (unlike ASUs etc from research) So be careful with what brand you go for if you mind the ram loss! (Of course if anyone knows a fix great!) Steve
PotNoodleTech Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 Yes at home. No at school. Onhe thing I have noticed - Intel are more energy efficient which doesnt matter at home so much but with 500 in school - could make a difference?

We switched to AMD Ryzen (8GB RAM) in Summer 2021 for engineering as they were are supposed to be better for graphics, and currently awaiting delivery on another 100 (CPU's out of stock in the country) - but art are struggling with Photoshop eating RAM even on the newest we've got.

We put 16Gb into ours from day one and people love them.
