Backup GPO's and install new Windows ADMX templates

Hi all,

 

I'm looking through my Global Policies and can see several things missing.

 

Obviously there are newer ADMX templates that reflect the new Winodws 10 features.

 

 

So....

 

1) How do I backup my current GPO's to be on the safe side.

 

2) Do I just dowlnoad the latest Windows ADMC template? I assume these will also have Windows11 features too? Is that ok to bring it in?

1) Go to the main GPO screen, Ctrl + A to Select All, right click and backup to a location of your choice.

 

 

2) That's what I'd do; just add it into the central store. I'd wait for a cleverur person to answer that one though, as I have a nagging feeling there was some sort of gotcha with the new releases.

If you are not running Windows 11, why use the latest ADMX that are for Windows 11...?

 

What are you missing and why can't you just use the latest for your server version/Windows 10 clients ADMX...?

 

Also, although prudent I don't think it's necessary to do a GPO backup while messing about with ADMX as IIRC I had it explained to me (on here I think) that one is just reading from the other (if your ADMX files go missing the GPOs don't change or disappear too, they just have nothing to read) I think in a few cases I've had where an ADMX setting has disappeared it just reverts itself to a reg entry.

I mean it's never *necessary* to take a backup. But if it is prudent to do so, it would be hard to talk your way out of needing to refresh your CV if you didn't and something went wrong.

 

Some ADMX support new options or stop supporting options as versions change. Sometimes changes can get tattooed into policies or simply aren't visible when using new/old version of the ADMX. So it's prudent to take a backup of the GPOs before you open/edit them with the new admx in place.

 

You should of course take a backup of the policydefinitions folder at the same time.

 

 

In the 19 years GPO backups have been in the GUI, I've never needed to roll back a GPOs because of a problem with an ADMX.
