Jerry Lee Lewis, notorious singer behind Great Balls of Fire, dies aged 87 after life marred by scandal and violence

Very sad news indeed, but I hate the way they've worded the headline.

I agree. I think, perhaps, the headline might be revised in due course.

He married his 13 yr old cousin. Notorious is tame IMO

Others agree. The Guardian has a very similar headline:

Quite normal in some Red-States. At least he married her...

No matter where or when, that was still deeply wrong and toxic.

I struggle to separate artist and person. Helps with someone like Kanye - I hate both.

Many cultures regard it as perfectly normal to marry and have children at a woman's most fertile age, and necessary to end up with enough children to look after parents in their old age.

I DON'T think that this is what is best for women (especially in this case). They should have the same opportunity as men. But in poor agricultural cultures where no one has 'opportunities' it is a fact of life.

Perhaps, but not in the 20th century in a supposedly ‘civilised’ country by someone who was well exposed to the benefits (and vices) of that time. Claiming a cultural reason for it - that has also been used in rape defence. It’s abhorrent.

The slightest mention of something vaguely political, or commenting on a job advert is met by an instant deletion by forum moderators, but rationalising paedophiia seems to be fair game. On an education forum. viewed in schools, by people working in schools.

I don't think it's appropriate. just saying.

And at this point I will close the thread. We all know his marriage is beyond dubious by any modern standard. Despite the forum rules, it seemed appropriate to let things be said in this case Edited October 30, 2022 by elsiegee40
